The Serra do Caparaó region had its Geographical Indication (GI) officially recognized on Tuesday, February 2, 2021, with the National Institute of Industrial Property (INPI). It is at this historical moment that coffee has its registration under the “Denomination of Origin” modality.

The registration process was structured by Sebrae/ES and partners, such as Caparaó Jr., Sicoob, IFES, Incaper, Ministry of Agriculture, Association of Specialty Coffee Producers of Caparaó (Apec), among others. The structuring methodology required several documents, projects and studies to prove the origin of the coffee produced in the region.

The Geographical Indication brings with it the perspective that the Caparaó region deserves, not only for its natural aspects, but also for its human aspects, and this makes its coffees unique and special. This recognition will bring benefits to thousands of small producer families, from where almost all of the coffee produced in the Serra do Caparaó region comes from.

The geographic area of the Caparaó Coffee Designation of Origin involves ten municipalities in the State of Espírito Santo and six in the State of Minas Gerais.

From Espírito Santo:

- Dores do Rio Preto;

– Divino de São Lourenço;

- Guaçuí;

- Alegre;
